Electric locomotive series HLE 16 The locomotives of the Series HLE 16Series 16 are electric locomotives that have been in use since 1966 with the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS). These locomotives were used for the international services until 2010, mainly between Ostend and Cologne. Development and usage: The locomotives of the Series HLE 16 were built in 2 series by BN o f Nivelles and ACEC of Charlerois. BN constructed the mechanical parts and the housing, and ACEC installed the electrical components and motors. The locomotives were delivered as the type 160 in 2 Series and were allocated the running numbers 160.001 to 160.004 (First series) and 160.021 to 160.024 (Second series). In 1971 both series were reclassified as the Series HLE 16Series 16 and were also renumbered with the numbers 1601 to 1608. The locomotives of the series 16 are multiple-system locomotives that were able to run on the Belgian, German, Swiss, French and Dutch catenary systems. The locomotives were mainly used for international traffic between Ostend and Cologne. The locomotives were also used sporadically between Brussels and Paris and from Brussels to Luxembourg. In 1974, the locomotives were also used for a short period as holiday trains Freccia del Sole to the Swiss Spiez. For this the locomotives were equipped with a fourth pantograph. Starting as from 2002 the locomotive s of the series HLE 16Series 16 were no longer permitted to run in Germany due to their outdated induction systems. In 2009 the last of these Series 16 locomotives were decommissioned as sufficient alternative equipment was available. The locomotives were finally and definitely decommissioned in 2010. Two locomotives (1602 and 1608) have been preserved. The remaining locomotives have been scrapped. Unique livery. When leaving the factory the HLE 11Series 11 locomotives were delivered in light blue livery. In the 1970s these were re-painted in yellow livery. Later a blue livery was once more used.
